Iyengar yoga is best known for its emphasis on precision of alignment of yoga poses and the use of props to help students attain alignment and learn the inner dynamics and effects of each pose. The system starts developing awareness of external alignment of the body and gradually penetrates inward through the habits of the mind and the secrets of the heart toward the casual core of being.
For the sincere practitioner, the physical, mental and emotional benefits come quickly. The more subtle energetic shifts and spiritual growth come slowly, but profoundly and inevitably.
"I am practicing asana, but at a level where the quality is meditative. The totality of being, from core to skin, is experienced. Mind is unruffled, intelligence is awake in the heart rather than the head, self is quiescent, and conscious life is in every cell of the body. That is what I mean when I say asana opens up the whole spectrum of yoga's possibilities."
